Sandy beaches line the shore at regular intervals, allowing rafters to pull up alongside. The slopes on either sides sport oak, pine, spruce and fir trees.

While organised river-running has been restricted to stretches of Bhagirathi, experts agree to the possibility of river running on other rivers in Garhwal like the Tons, Mandakini and Alaknanda. Those interested in running these unchartered waters could launch their own expeditions with the help of the Indian professionals.

River rafting is possible on the following stretches:

Bhagirathi:
Matuli to Dunda – 12 kms; both professional and tourist stretches
Dharasu to Chham – 12 kms; both professional and tourist stretches.
Jangla to Jhala – 20 kms; both professional and tourist stretches
Bhaldyana to Tehri – Both professional and tourist stretches.
Yamuna:
Barkot to Lakha Mandal - Both professional and tourist stretches
Damta to Yamuna Bridge – Both professional and tourist stretches.
Tons:
Mori to Tuni – Between this stretch is Asia's tallest pine tree measuring 160 mts.
Bhilangana River:
Ghansali to Gadolia – 32 kms; strictly professional stretch.
Mandakini River:
Chandrapuri to Rudraprayag – 30 kms; stictly professional stretch.
